Finally getting around to writing up my race recap from the Truffle Shuffle. No review on this one, since I did it last year 🙂
Let me just say, I did NOT feel like running this race. I had been sick all week, barely able to talk and had been coughing like crazy the past few days. So I had been bargaining with myself for the past couple of days. If it was raining, I wouldn’t go…If I didn’t feel good, I wouldn’t go…so on and so forth.
So race morning gets here and I wake up and am literally dragging myself around getting dressed and getting ready. The whole time, I’m just like I don’t really feel like doing this, blah blah blah. But I still got in the car and headed towards the race. Of course, the whole time I’m driving, I keep checking the clock and thinking, “If I get there and it’s already started I will just go back home.” But I got there with about 10 minutes to spare, so I was good on that front.
I hopped in the back, and just hung out trying to keep warm. I wore my lululemon crops, a tank top, a swiftly long-sleeve, and then my lululemon half-zip pull over. I just kept telling myself that I could walk as much as I wanted/needed to and not to worry about it. So off we went right on time.
I ran the whole first mile, and was actually feeling pretty good. My first mile came in at 15:21, which is a pretty good pace for me. After the first mile, I took a walk break and that’s when the bad thing I talked about in my post a million years ago happen. The cop that was there to monitor traffic actually stopped the runners to let traffic go. For at least 3 minutes. I was shocked, because I have NEVER had that happen before. It wasn’t like there was a big gap between us and the people who had just passed the intersection ahead of us. There was hardly any gap at all! I don’t think it was right for him to force us to stop. I understand that people were driving, but still, this race has gone on there for a few years now. It really kind of ticked me off. I don’t know if that’s protocol for them or not, since like I said, I’ve never had it happen before.
After that little mishap, I was ready to run again. So I trucked along at a decent pace and clocked my second mile at 17:00. Obviously being stopped affected my time. I managed to cruise along though and make up ground and brought the third mile in at 15:45.
Just beginning the fourth mile there is this huge hill that is actually pretty steep and feels like it last a mile. Last year it really kicked my ass. However I am proud to say that on that day, I made that hill my bitch and ran up the entire thing. It might have been slow, but I know I passed a few people and no one passed me on the hill so I was happy!
I finished my fourth mile in 15:38, and finished the whole race in 1:03:48. Three minutes I believe off of last years time 🙂 I was happy with any improvement, but I think if I hadn’t take two walk breaks and DEFINITELY not been stopped, I could have broken a hour on this race.
